Citizens of the following countries will require a Visa to enter Tokyo:

How to Apply for a Visa to Japan

• Prepare the required documents for your visa application.
• Submit your documents to the Japanese Embassy or Consulate-General in your country of residence.
• Pay the non-refundable visa application fee (typically ¥3,000–¥6,000 JPY, depending on your nationality and visa type).
• You will be notified of your application outcome by the embassy or consulate.

Required Documents

• A valid passport
• Completed visa application form
• Flight itinerary
• Proof of financial means (e.g. certificate of income, tax return, or bank balance)
• Travel itinerary
• Invitation letter with proof of accommodation

It is strongly recommended to apply as early as possible.
Processing typically takes around 5-7 working days, but can take longer (up to 45 days) in special cases.

Important Notes

• General goods and consumables cannot be combined to meet the minimum tax-free threshold — they are calculated separately.
• In malls or department stores with a centralized tax-free counter, purchases from multiple shops within the same complex may be aggregated to meet the ¥5,000 minimum.
• The tax-free benefit is given at the time of purchase, not at the airport. You must show your passport and complete the required forms at the shop.

🚫 No VAT Refund at Airport

Japan does not operate a refund system at the airport like in Europe. You must claim the tax exemption at the time of purchase in participating stores.
