Labour Day

Labour Day, or Festa dei Lavoratori, is celebrated on 1 May as a national public holiday honoring workers’ rights and achievements. It’s observed throughout Italy, including in Milan.

What Happens in Milan:

  • Parades and Demonstrations: Trade unions organize marches and rallies through the city, often ending with speeches or concerts in Piazza della Scala. These events highlight workers’ rights, social issues, and solidarity.
  • Public Events: Some cultural and community events, including musical performances and local gatherings, take place throughout Milan, creating a lively spring atmosphere.
  • Leisure and Family Time: Many locals use the day to relax, enjoy parks, or spend time outdoors with family and friends.

Many shops, banks and government offices may be closed, and public transport can run on a reduced holiday schedule. Tourist attractions and museums may remain open, but it’s advisable to check ahead before your journey.
